This dwarf galaxy, visible right here in the Southern hemisphere, is one of our nearest neighbors at 199,000 light years from earth. Although our ancestors from Africa & Oceania knew it as part of their cosmovision, it is named after Hernando de Magallanes, who gazed at it back in the 16th century.
